David Burrowes MP votes for improving autism services
3rd March 2009
Local MP David Burrowes voted in favour of the Autism Bill on Friday 27th February against Government attempts to block it.
The Autism Bill, which is a Private Member’s Bill introduced by Mrs Cheryl Gillan MP, won a vote to stop it being “talked out” by 131 votes to 25. The Government opposed the Bill, arguing that their statutory guidance was a better way of dealing with issues at a local level.
The Bill would put a legal duty on councils and NHS services to look after people with autism. It would improve information on the number of children and adults with autism, ensure effective transition from child to adult services, and tackle the shocking lack of support for adults with autism.
David said:
“I am delighted that this Bill has passed its second reading and will now move on to committee stage. It represents real hope for thousands of autistic people across the country and my only regret is that the Government does not consider it to be a priority. Friday’s vote along with their treatment of fellow Enfield resident Gary McKinnon, recently diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, shows that this Government is not taking autism seriously enough.”
The Bill will now move on to committee stage where it will be scrutinised by MPs.
