August 2009

5th August 2009

Parliament is now in recess. Some may think at a time of crisis - the economy, swine flu, Afghanistan, expenses scandal - Parliament should not be on holiday. But others will welcome MPs not having the opportunity to pass more laws given the torrent over the last 12 years! The cynics amongst you may expect a "gone away" sign on my constituency office for the next 3 months. The reality will be “business as usual” with the constituency mailbag continuing to fill and receive a response.

I will be away for 3 weeks with my family in the Lake District and Sussex. Last year I met the challenge of getting all our family on bikes. It took 13 wheels to get me, Janet and our 6 children onto wheels. I will give some Sussex rock to anyone who can work out how we did it! The challenge for this year is to see how many pairs of legs will make it up to Helvelyn!

I will also be taking the opportunity over the recess to get out and about as much as possible to hear your concerns. Parliament has become detached from the public and it is important that MPs make the most of the time to reconnect with their constituents. Give my office a call if you want me to come around to meet you and your neighbours or to visit a local organisation or activity. Alternatively look out for my mobile surgery, or if you are in Winchmore Hill Sainsburys check out my regular 'spot' at Starbucks.

One person who I very much hope will not have the "gone away" sign on his house is my constituent Gary Mckinnon. I am pleased that the long campaign to stop his extradition to the US has gained national coverage. However at present the US seems as determined to make an example of Gary hacking into their top security computers as the Government is seemingly determined to ignore the impact of his Aspergers’ Syndrome. The campaign has gained cross party support and tears of concern from No10 but we need action and justice being done in this country for Gary Mckinnon.
