David Burrowes tables Early Day Motion in support of Daily Mail campaign against extradition of Gary McKinnon

9th July 2009

Local MP David Burrowes has tabled an Early Day Motion commending the Daily Mail ‘Affront to British Justice’ campaign to prevent the extradition of Enfield resident Gary McKinnon to the United States on charges of computer hacking. The campaign, which was launched last week, has gained the backing of prominent MPs across parties, including Conservative and Liberal Democrat leaders David Cameron and Nick Clegg, and former Home Secretary David Blunkett.

The EDM states:

That this House commends the recent Daily Mail campaign against the extradition to the United States of Gary McKinnon on charges of computer misuse; welcomes the continued cross-party support to stop the extradition; notes that the charges being brought by the US authorities are for events which happened whilst on British soil; further notes the significant impact of Asperger's Syndrome on Mr McKinnon; believes that it would be an injustice to carry out the extradition of Mr McKinnon; and urges the Government to review its decision in relation to the extradition order.

David said:
As Gary’s constituency MP I have been a longstanding campaigner in the fight for Gary and welcome the boost given to the campaign by the Daily Mail. The campaign has reached a crucial stage as we await the court’s judgement on 14th July. I hope the EDM that I have tabled in Parliament will provide additional pressure and command widespread support across the House. Time is running out for Gary and the Government has to act now to avert this injustice.

Gary McKinnon’s application for a judicial review of the extradition order is due to be heard in the High Court on 14th July.
