David Burrowes supports War Memorial Trust campaign
12th July 2010
Following on from his intervention in the First World War Commemoration Debate, David Burrowes is pledging his support for the War Memorial Trust campaign and the important work of the UK National Inventory of War Memorials (UKNIWM).
Many memorials are suffering from neglect and some from desecration. To save these memorials, and thereby honour the sacrifice of the wartime generation, there first needs to be a complete inventory to ascertain the size of the task. There are currently estimated to be 100,000 war memorials in the UK, a large proportion of which are First World War memorials. So far the National Inventory for War Memorials has managed to register 60,000.
The War Memorial Trust campaign aims to have every First World War memorial in the country registered in time for the 2014 centenary of the outbreak of World War One.
David Burrowes said:
“With the public’s support we should be able to get all WW1 memorials registered in time for the 2014 centenary. I call on all my constituents to support the War Memorial Trust’s campaign.”
