Ashes legend Gatting tunes in to back MP’s charity cricket match
13th August 2010
Enfield Southgate MP David Burrowes has enlisted the help of England’s last overseas Ashes winning captain to raise more than £5,000 at a charity cricket match.
Mr Burrowes is organising the match in conjunction with Southgate Cricket Club, with the majority of the funds raised going towards the new North London Hospice day care centre in Barrowell Green.
Former England and Middlesex captain and one-time Enfield Cricket Club start Mike Gatting will be guest commentator at the match at 5pm on September 10th at the Walker cricket Ground in Waterfall Road, Southgate.
Mr Burrowes is delighted the England and Middlesex legend is supporting the charity event at the same time as the current England team is preparing to win this years Ashes test series in Australia. The last time an England team achieved such a feat was under Gatting’s all-conquering captaincy in 1987.
At the charity match, one team will be made up of players from the Southgate Cricket Club while the other will include several MPs alongside Mr Burrowes, although there are still a few spaces left in the MPs team for any budding cricketers out there.
You can also get involved by heading down to the ground to lend your support on the day. There will also be a charity auction as well as other opportunities to donate money.
As well as raising funds for the new day care centre, cash will be divided between the Dispossessed Fund, set up by the Evening Standard and London Mayor Boris Johnson to fight homelessness and poverty in the capital and other charities.
Some will go towards creating a new Enfield Good Samaritan Network. This was inspired by the concerns of several of Mr Burrowes’ constituents who had reported difficulties finding the correct support for a homeless person they were trying to help.
Mr Burrowes said “The idea is to foster a support network to help those who are dealing with issues of addiction and mental health which often lead to homelessness”
