Haiti

Our hearts and prayers are with the people of Haiti at this awful time. I am sure many of my constituents will want to do all they can to support the people of Haiti at this time, and I fully support the appeal launched by the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and is least well equipped to cope with this catastrophe.

We need to do all we can to support the international aid effort led by the US. But we cannot leave it there. The US as a near neighbour is right to shoulder most of the burden to help this desperate country and together with the UN they will be need to provide long term reconstruction assistance.
