David Burrowes MP statement about Gary McKinnon
26th May 2010
David Burrowes welcomes the decision by the new Home Secretary to halt extradition proceedings to consider medical evidence.
"The decision by the new Home Secretary to halt extradition proceedings in order to consider medical evidence is extremely welcome. It pre-empted the imminent court hearing and showed that we have a Government which will not now wash its hands of a one of its vulnerable citizens. I have requested an urgent meeting with the Home Secretary to press the case for Gary to stay in this country and receive justice here.
I was surprised to hear the Deputy Prime Minister's comments which suggested there was not the power to intervene in Gary's case. I have seen the medical evidence which provides compelling grounds to intervene due to Gary's significant ill health. It would be a fundamental breach of Gary McKinnon's human rights to extradite him and I remain optimistic that common sense and compassion will prevail and the Home Secretary will make the right decision."
