MP dismay at Home Secretary "washing his hands" of Gary Mckinnon
27th November 2009
As Gary Mckinnon's local MP, David Burrowes has been leading the campaign in Parliament to stop his extradition to the US.
Two weeks ago David met with the Home Secretary and initiated the Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry and on Wednesday David again raised Gary's case during the debate on the Queens Speech. David has called for Alan Johnson to stop the extradition due to substantial medical evidence identifying Gary Mckinnon's mental illness and impact of Aspergers Syndrome and concern that Gary would take his life if extradited to the US.
Following the Home Secretary's decision to allow extradition proceedings to continue David said:
"It is extremely disappointing that the repeated calls for compassion and justice for Gary have been ignored by the Home Secretary. Despite substantial medical grounds giving Alan Johnson the opportunity to stop the extradition he has washed his hands of Gary. I will continue to challenge the decision in Parliament and the Gary's lawyers will be seek a judicial review of a seemingly unreasonable and unfair decision".
